Master pages contain two types of text frames. Usually there is a text frame that holds the main content of the document. In the Object Properties of this text frame, the Tag is usually set to A and the autoconnect box is checked. The other type of text frame holds the running headers and footers. Its Tag is blank and the autoconnect box is NOT checked. Maybe you have the variable in the wrong text frame.
