I'm thinking this is a FM error, but maybe just an ambiguity. I'm using FM8, with the stock dita topic app., but have verified this behavior against FM9 as well.

I am representing code, a Smalltalk method definition, and attempting to bold the method selector. The xml is:

<codeblock>
renderContentOn: html
	"html heading level: 3; with: self class name asString."
</codeblock>

When I read this in to FM, it ignores the line break following , displaying both lines as a single line. If I remove the bolding, it displays properly with the line break in place. If I, alternatively, place a non-whitespace character immediately following the , it also displays properly (but, of course, is then incorrect for my purposes).

Is this a r/w rule error, or something else?

In dita, <codeblock> is a specialization of

, but can, according to the spec, contain elements such as

 where

 cannot.

Any suggestions?
THanks
Bruce

Oh, my bad. I didn't think of the codes getting processed. Could have used a preview first. Repeating, starting with the code fragment:

<codeblock>
<b>renderContentOn: html</b>
	"html heading level: 3; with: self class name asString."
</codeblock>

When I read this in to FM, it ignores the line break following </b>, displaying both lines as a single line. If I remove the bolding, it displays properly with the line break in place. If I, alternatively, place a non-whitespace character immediately following the </b>, it also displays properly (but, of course, is then incorrect for my purposes).

Is this a r/w rule error, or something else?

In dita, <codeblock> is a specialization of <pre>, but can, according to the spec, contain elements such as <p> where <pre> cannot.

This is a FM bug. Any child elements within a preformatted element that "touch" the beginning or ending of a line within that preformatted element will gobble up the line break. If you add a space after the end of the child element before the line break it should survive the round trip.

Or .. if you use DITA-FMx this bug is automatically fixed for you. :)
