Are you able to see change bars for selected text when applied through the menu (Format > Style > Change Bar)? If not, perhaps the change bars are set to white or another invisible color (Format > Document > Change Bars), or perhaps the distance from column is such that the change bars are effectively hidden. Window > Refresh may be needed occasionally.
