Trudy, I ran into this problem and solved it by dividing a nominal paragraph into multiple actual paragraphs and by stringing them together into a single nominal paragraph by using the run-in head option for all actual paragraphs but the last. The run-in head option is on the pagination tab of the paragraph designer. More specifically (for your case), I divide the nominal paragraph into three actual paragraphs: the text preceding the italic, the italic text, and the text following the italic. Then I cross reference each paragraph individually and set the font per paragraph. For the second paragraph, I set the font to italic in both the source paragraph and the target paragraph. In the nominal target paragraph, I can alternatively string the three cross references together without putting each into its own actual paragraph, and I can then implement italic by using a character trait instead of a paragraph trait. After creating one target instance, I copy and paste future instances. Philip
