I'm a novice in using FM, and I haven't yet created a TOC, so I didn't think about that problem.

From what you say, I'm assuming that the TOC picks up every instance of a Heading 1 paragraph and creates a TOC entry for it. If this is what happens, then you're correct. However, as I'm sitting here typing, the following possibility occurs to me.

Find the first location in the body of the document where you invoke the heading of concern by cross reference. Replace that invocation by defining the heading using three actual source paragraphs in the way that I described, with the first two as run-in heads. Tag those paragraphs with a tag such as Heading XXX source, where XXX is meaningful. (If this occurrence is embedded in a nominal paragraph in the body of the document, then the text prior to the occurrence will need to be a run-in head, and the last actual paragraph of the heading will need to be a run-in head.)

Now in the Heading 1 paragraph -- the target paragraph -- string the text of the three source paragraphs together using three respective cross references as described in paragraph 3 of my message. Since you said that the italic character trait is preserved in the TOC, then I infer that it will be preserved in the scenario that I've described.

Finally, use the same cross reference technique throughout the document that you used in the Heading 1 paragraph . That is, copy and paste the contents of the Heading 1 paragraph without the paragraph marker.

As I reason it through, this should work. Please let me know if it does.
