This shortcuts the process of making the style, but it doesn't make a 
"based-on" style in the same way that JJ Juarez wants. He wants styles 
that permanently reflect the inherited properties of the styles they are 
based on. In other words, if you make a style called "Text" and define 
it to be 10/12 Sabon, then make a new style called "Extract" based on 
Text and define it to have 36 pt indents left and right, when you later 
change Text to Goudy, Extract will change to Goudy as well.

This kind of style structure, if properly set up, allows you to very 
easily modify entire stylesheets. You can show the client how the whole 
book will look in several different typefaces, simply by making one font 
change to one style.

As implemented in Indesign, this is a choice. Any style can be either 
based on another style, or based on No Style.
