you also have to actually change the image some way or it won't save. I generally try to do the Ctrl-S to save the Illustrator files, but it actually doesn't do anything (or tell you it's not going to do anything) if the second file doesn't have any changes you've requested it to make.

I generally grab one of the images, pixel bump it up one, and then down one to make some change and then hit the Ctrl-S.

Note that if you have the second image open in Illustrator at the time and edit the original file, the second file recognizes the change and asks if you want to reload it. However, it doesn't consider that to be a "change" that lets you do a Ctrl-S on.

Also, if you change the size of the first image, the second image keeps it as the same size as the original (not the same shrink percentage). If you re-load or "revert" the second file, it gets the new file and attaches the correct shrink percentage, thereby getting back a truer image. Note that "revert" will also not be available to you if the only thing that has changed is that the linked file is modified. You have to do the pixel bump thing to get it to "change" something so you can "revert" it. I had some very strange results in the FrameMaker output when my linked images were changed and I hadn't reverted or reloaded it in the second file.
