This is a bit of a shot in the dark - but going back to the installation problems on XP, did anybody have Outlook running when they were installing? I've had installation problems in the past due to this on Win2k (so i expect XP is the same) and it is not sufficient to simply close Outlook, you actually have to go into the task manager and kill the OUTLOOK process.
