Folks, I solved the problem, sort of. I unchecked everything except alias 8 bits and compress text and files. The quality is great, but, alas, so is the file size. I ballooned from 32M to 189M, as opposed to the unreadable one of a mere 8 megs. I also found that the really bad file was a .pdf, and replacing it with a .gif helped. Since we send a single document on CD-ROM, size is not a problem; but, if anyone knows how to keep the quality but in a smaller package, please let me know.
