cross referencing external data by content

I need to define crossreferences in a framemaker document (ver 5.5) to external data (XML form). The XML is auto-generated by a tool but can be changed to MIF, MML or anyother form. 

I know I can transform XML to MIF with markers and then cross reference. Is there a better way. 

Any help is appreciated. Thanks -Dilbagh Chahal
