There's a lot there with which I agree.

Certainly, it is cool that FrameMaker is now one product but, beyond that, I agree FM 7 is not an exciting upgrade. And, I have to question what percentage of the FrameMaker installed base uses SGML, and what percentage of those users are using XML--which is the major point of the new release.

However, FrameMaker continues to be solid, robust, and productive. If you want to get work done, in my opinion, FrameMaker continues to be your best, if unexciting, bet.

Moreover, Quadralay's new WordHelp and AuthorIT notwithstanding, WebWorks Publisher Pro + FrameMaker make a truly solid and efficient single-sourcing environment and an excellent alternative to traditional, high-maintenance, and costly database single-sourcing approaches.

That is, while I agree with many of the points raised in the article, I agree with them only insofar as it is a judgement about the upgrade, version 7 versus version 6, and not about the value of FrameMaker as a whole.

However, Adobe has to really consider using FrameMaker 7 as a launching pad for some cool innovation in version 8.

Cheers,

Sean
