Agreed, some of Word's behaviour can be fixed by turning off all manner of automizations. However, the numbering is still broken, and it can change spontaneoulsy if you move a DOC to another PC. Style creep still happens, standard Word styles that you don't use still sneak into your document and extensive customizations to Normal.dot cause program instability. And, trying to layout graphics by using float breaks of more than two or three graphics are used on the same page. And, I didn't yet mention master docs. <vbg>

These issues have plagued every release of MS Word after version 2.

And, yes, I have written 600-page software user guides using no Word macros, featuring numerous numbered lists, numerous graphics, and repeating style elements--but such a project is more rapidly and reliably done in FrameMaker and, no, sharing out those DOC source files to others on different PCs is not recommended, the numbering and layout can go all to Hell, which defeats the "ubiquity" argument for using Word in the first place.

Cheers,

Sean
