One thing that breaks single tables into multiple tables is spanned cells. You can join them and they import fine ... except that the header rows are not real headers. I have a document at www.techknowledgecorp.com/public/word2frame.pdf that, on the last page, includes a Word macro you can run on a MIF to turn the top row into a real heading row.
