My problem was exactly what Neil had described--I was printing a book to a PS file using the File|Print command, but the results were b/w. (I also verified that Distiller was using the correct settings in the PDF conversion.)  

I did find a remedy for the problem yesterday--I select File|Print, select "Acrobat Distiller" as my printer, and then cancel out of the print dialog. Then I "save" the entire book to PDF (File|Save As). (I verified that Distiller was using the same settings as before in the PDF conversion.) When you select a printer and cancel out of the print dialog, this printer becomes the "vehicle" for the pdf conversion. 

This PDF conversion process has been quirky for me. I am running FM 5.5 on Win2000 platform. No matter what I did, the resulting PDF did not have color. I still cannot print to a PS file and get color results. I had to try different combinations of factors in order to solve the problem, and the procedure I described in the paragraph above finally solved my dilemma. While I am working on a documentation project, I am thankful that I don't have to document any features like this pdf conversion--surely I would be confused in the process ;)
