Framemaker format

A person on another group wants to convert Framemaker to e.g., TeX. If
Framemaker consists of text plus embedded tags like Ventura Publisher
or TeX then this could be done with a program or some scripting in
e.g., Awk.

What is the nature of a native Framemaker file? Is it textual or
binary?

Can one using Framemaker export the file to plain text, or another
textual format like XML?

Thanks for your help.
