How to convert Market Text to visible text?

Here's the use case:
Frame was used with WebWorks to single source PDF and OLH topics. Topics were demarcated with Markers. WebWorks would create one HTML file for each chunk of content associated with a marker and create the HTML file name using the marker text (hidden string). HTML files were called by the UI as context-sensitive help topics.

Here's the situation now:
Using FrameMaker > RoboHelp in the communication suite. Robo does not chunk topics in the same way. It triggers not on the marker, but on the Paragraph Tag. If I can convert the marker text to any sort of visible text, I can tag it and use that tag to demarcate topics in the RoboHTML conversion.

Question:
Do you know of any way to display marker text? I can't seem to find one. Best I can do is, A., manually convert each marker, or, B. Create a List of Markers containing all the names and locations.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience/wisdom on this.

The IXGen program, from <http://www.fsatools.com/>, will let you open all markers in standard text viewing/editing mode. Yes, it's primarily an Indexing tool, but in Frame, a marker is a marker.

I believe there's an eval version available.

Thanks, Art. I've downloaded, installed, and applied for an eval license and will check it out. Looks like a good tool, but it may not cover this case exactly. Will let you know when I find out.

In the meantime, additional ideas are still appreciated.

One alternative might be tackling the problem via FrameScript. There's a FrameScript group on Yahoo, at
<*> To visit your group on the web, go to:
    <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/framescript-users/>

I believe there are several FS users who do custom scripts for clients; one person I can highly recommend is Rick Quatro at <http://www.frameexpert.com>

Our MarkerTools plugin also lets you expand markers into text .. in addition to being able to export/import marker text (and other things) ..

 <http://leximation.com/tools/info/markertools.php>

There are other plugins that provide similar features that might be worth looking at (listed on our ToolSearch database) ..

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. The IXgen tool does a good job of exposing marker text, but ultimately didn't fit my needs for this issue -- there would be almost the same amount of manual post-processing required as doing it by hand. Which is what I'm doing.

In case anyone else has to go down this path, here's the gist of it:

1. generate a list of markers, w/ hyperlinks
2. create a unique Frame paragraph style, e.g., RoboTopic
   2.1 create a new element, e.g., eRoboTopic
3. create a condition tag. e.g. Robo (hide for print, pdf, and port)
4. Find, in book, Marker of Type: x or click link from your LOM
5. Insert Element
6. Copy existing marker to element.
7. Copy out marker text, and past w/in element.
8. Apply paragraph and condition tags.
9. Copy element containing marker text and tags.
10. Find next marker. Paste previous element near it.
11. Open new marker and change text in element to reflect text in new marker.
12. Repeat ad nauseam. At least your element, paragraph formatting and condition can be carried forward. So in the end, what you're doing is opening each marker and pasting the text into the formatted element.
13. When you're port the book to RoboHelp, you'll have a chance to identify the marker WebWorks used in Frame to demarcate topics. Specify it.
14. You will also need to map the Robo paragraph style (created for Frame) to a unique style that exists in the .css you are using for the Robo project, and tell Robo to use that style as the break for new topics. Robo creates a new topic each time it encounters the specified style.
15. complete the port.

These notes are a bit rough -- I'll try to come back and refine it at another time.

Refinements, or even a wholly better way, are welcome.

take care,
David
