Conditional text adding paragrpah returns?

I'm trying to show/hide instructor pages of text for a student copy of a book but, when I hide the instructor information (styled as conditional text) paragraph returns, with conditional markers, are being added.

What may be causing these, and how can I avoid them? This doesn't happen in the source files I received from my client, but I can't see what I'm doing differently in my template that would cause this.

Renee,

Are you applying to the Condition to the entire paragraph including
the end of paragraph symbol? Hint: turn on the View > Symbols to see
what you're selecting.

YEP, the paragraph return symbols are styled too.

The weird thing is that it's only doing this on a few pages, and the paragraph symbols showing up are not even of the same style as the text that is set to conditional.

I've never had to style entire pages of text as conditional before so I'm really baffled.
