I have created the autonumber
Part <n+>:\r
OR
Part <n+>:\x09
where my intent is insert a hard (forced) return resuting in something like
Part 1
Rise of the Doughboy
as one paragraph. But neither \r nor \x09 seems to work. Can anyone see what I might do differently?
Thank you kindly,
Elchanan

Elchanan, Sorry, but FM won't allow you to do that - add a forced return in an autonumber. It's been sought after for a long time... You could accomplish this by using two paragraph tags in concert. The first tag, e.g. Part_numbered would have the autonumber component and also have the "Next Pgf Tag" set to a tag for the actual title, e.g. Part_title. Then just insert the Part_numbered tag, hit Enter and continue typing. One extra keystroke to contend with. ;-)

Thanks Arnis. For me, it's more than one keystroke. I want these entries in the TOC ... so your solution, which clearly "works", requires creation of a special paratag for the paragraph followiong the part #. Sigh ... I used FM extensively a decade or so ago, and I have this recollection that this once worked. Perhaps only in variables or cross-references, I haven't gotten back to those yet. Today or tomorrow! :) Best regards, Elchanan

Elchanen, When you were using Frame many years ago, maybe you were using structured Frame. The EDD of a structured document can apply a prefix and a suffix to a paragraph that is in addition to the autonumber. I use a prefix to place the word NOTE followed by a line break (\r) as the first line of a note. The EDD can apply both a prefix and an autonumber to a paragraph element, in which case the autonumber displays before the prefix. So, in your case, the prefix would simply be slash R. I have never tried doing this in a structured document; moreover, I do not know if there is a way to achieve the same thing in an unstructured document. Arnis' post indicates not. Van

Elchanan, Well, for the TOC it's even easier! Simply edit your TOC entry on the TOC Reference page to add the <$paranum> building block at the beginning, then add a forced return (shift + Enter) after the paranum building block and regenerate the TOC.

Thanks everyone. Actually I just realized that a 2-paragraph solution will work just fine. I want the line break in the document but not in the TOC ... thanks, Arnis, for raising that distinction. So if I use 2 tags: Part# PartName then pick up both in the TOC and format Part# TOC as a run-in paragraph sans page #, then I believe I'll end up with what I seek. Make sense? Thank you kindly, Elchanan

Hello VLM, the following (evil) hack seems to work optically: For your numbered format that needs to display like what you want, set the following numbering property: Z:Part <n+>\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (do not omit the slashes) This way, you add non-breaking spaces to the numbering that bully your text into the next line. If your next line has a left indent of, say two centimetres, you get what you want. Warning: The longer the text before the slashes is, the less slashes you need. If you have too many slashes, the text before the slashes does not display porperly. When the width of your pages varies, you must adapt the format.
