Autonumbering: Using <$chapnum> with Appendices

Hi everyone,

In the book we are creating, we plan to use numbered chapters and lettered appendices, as:

Chapter 1
Chapter 2
etc.
Appendix A
Appendix B

I realize that it's easy to continue or restart numbering from within a book. But the <$chapnum> building block was added since I last used FrameMaker. So ... is it numeric only? (Seems it is, just confirming.)

Thank you kindly,
Elchanan

While I'm on this topic, can an autonumber counter be set to a nonprinting character, something like < =nonprintingcharacter>. I'm thinking of this as a solution for unnnumbered document components, such as introduction, forward, and the like, where there is no chapter/appendix #. That way, I wouldn't need to recreate the lower-level numbered tags that typically use chapter/appendix as their first value.

I hope this question makes sense!

Thank you kindly,
Elchanan

Well, I may have just answered my own question. I now see that the Numbering Properties dialog has been improved from long ago, and that I can choose numeric/alphabetic/text for <$chapnum> for each component in the book. Am I understanding correctly?

Also, may I conclude that choosing "text" solves my second issue, above?

Thank you kindly,
Elchanan

Correct, you can use the text option to enter whatever you wish.

But set the numbering properties from the book file, not in the document files. That is, in the book file, right-click a document name and select numbering; set the numbering properties there. If you set them in the document file, Frame complains when you update the book and uses the settings in the book file instead.
