Numbering: Hiding in text, showing in pdf bookmarks?

Hi, What I'm trying to do may simply not be possible-- I don't know. I'm working with a multi-chapter book in FM8, and I want to hide the chapter numbers in the actual text, but I'd like them to show up in the bookmarks when I generate a pdf. I've tried formatting the "Chapter" paragraph format with autonumbering using < $chapnum>, and the space in that is effective at hiding the number in the text, but it also hides it in the bookmark. I've also tried creating a character format that's essentially invisible (white and pretty microscopic) and applying that to the autonumber, but have the same results. That, in particular, is odd to me because other character formats (such as bold, italic, etc.) do not affect the format of the bookmark. Regardless, it doesn't seem to work. Anyone have any ideas, or know for sure that this can't be done? Thanks, Melinda

Melinda: I'm not sure if "in the actual text" means a cross-reference formatting issue, or if you have Chapter numbers in headings that you want to display or hide depending on viewing context. Assuming it's the latter, might Conditional Text be one way to attack this problem? That is to say, create two nearly identical named paragraph styles, one with autonumbering, one without. Use Conditional Text to tag a particular style as Numbered or Unnumbered, then at the FrameMaker book level use Show/Hide Conditional text to gen the PDF with the numbered paragraph style shown and the unnumbered style hidden. Reverse after gen'ing the PDF. Cheers & hope this helps, Riley

A quick clarifying question here.... When you say "PDF bookmark," are you talking about the links from the book's FM TOC within the PDF or are you talking about the bookmarks that show up in the left side navigation pane of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader? Art

Ah, I was afraid I wouldn't manage to explain myself completely the first time around! :-D What I'm talking about with "in the actual text" is that, while the chapters do have underlying numbers and those numbers are used in subheadings (e.g. 4.1.1), I do not want the chapter number to be shown to the user in the chapter title itself. The reason for this is essentially that I'm using a graphical number, so having the chapnum displayed would be redundant. Thus, conditional text won't work for me, as it would have to be simultaneously hidden (for the chapter titles) and shown (to create the PDF bookmarks). When I refer to PDF bookmarks, I'm talking about the ones in the left side nav pane. Good question. Thanks, Melinda

OK, If the only place that you need to hide the chapter number is in the ChapTitle tag... all you need to do is delete <$chapnum> from that tag's Autonumbering field in Paragraph Designer. Because it's set at the book level, it will still be called by the tags that control your headings and subheadings. Art

MicroType's Timesavers has a way to control / change the bookmark text -- here's a description: <http://www.microtype.com/ImprovePDF04.html> [if you're not familiar with it, Timesavers is a very, very, very good 3rd party utility, highly recommended by legions of FM users] Sheila

Melinda, Art's suggestion is correct for not displaying the chapter number in the title, but it does not get you the chapter number in the PDF bookmarks. This is rather clunky but should work: add another paragraph before or after the title paragraph and use the same title as its content. Then add the <$chapnum> building block to its autonumber. Create a new paragraph format style for this paragraph. In the paragraph format, set the color of the default font to white. The font size and line spacing can be anything you want, but you will have to adjust before and after spacing for the title paragraph or following paragraph. Thus, this paragraph has the chapter title and number "displayed" but in white. Then in the PDF dialog box, INCLUDE this paragraph format in the bookmarks and EXCLUDE your original title paragraph format. I do not think you can use conditional text to do what you want because hiding the text means that it will not display in the bookmarks. I do not know anything about Timesavers, so maybe it will do all this transparently. Van

Thanks to all for the ideas! It's looking like it may be just as (in)efficient to go in and manually edit the PDF bookmarks after generation. The Timesavers utility looks great, but I don't know that my company will approve the purchase of license for my entire team. Guess we'll see! Best, Melinda
