Framemaker 7.1 known limits ?

Hi All, I have a PL/SQL process that takes some vertor graphics that are already in pdf format, one graphic per page, one page per PDF, and creates a MIF file, adding each pdf on a single page with a custom header and footer. The result is a mif file with multiple pages and on each page there is a graphic (which is imported from a pdf) and a custom header and footer.

The problem I have is that whenever I try to create a mif file with more than five graphics, the master page seems to be corrupted, in fact when I look at the MIF file in framemaker, the last bodypage's header and footer are displayed on an extra page that should not be there. I have absolutely no errors when opening the MIF file in framemaker except some minor font errors so I guess that the structure of the file is OK.

So I was wondering if there was, like a limit in line numbers or character number that a MIF file can have or someting like this that could cause that problem. Actually my MIF file can have more than 35000 lines which is also quite a lot of characters.

Does anyone have any idea on that ? I know it might not be a lot of information but I just don't have more.

Thanks.

Which specific version of FM 7.1 (from Help > About, the "pxxx" numbers).

What OS?

How about the system this is running on, can you get some specs for the amount of RAM, size of the swap file?

Patch version and lack of memory would be my first suspects.

An in addition to Shelia's questions... my first thought is that you're copying the files into the MIF rather than importing by reference.

That would mean that the files are now a (massive) part of the file and you may be running up against a resource limitation on your computer (either RAM or temp or swap space)rather than a FM limitation.

If I were you, I'd try creating an echo of the generated file manually, to see if that works. And also try importing by reference.

Ah, good catch, Art -- copying rather than referencing definitely would be an issue.

I am using FM 7.1. This is my problem: I was taking screen shots from a controller and importing them by reference into FrameMaker. After working for 3 hours, I tried to import yet another graphic, when the wrong one came up. At first I thought I had simply chosen the wrong filename to import, but after trying about 10 times, I kept getting the wrong graphic, worse yet, when I scrolled up to the part of my document that I had previously saved, some of those graphics had reverted to the same incorrect graphic that I was trying to get rid of. What can I do to correct this?

Peggy, it's very confusing for us to answer your question when you've posted to somebody else's topic -- please open a new topic on the forum. When you do, please specify the exact version of FM that you are using, including the "pxxx" numbers shown in Help > About.

The exact version of my Framemaker is 7.1p114
The PL/SQL procedure that creates the mif is in fact run on an ORACLE APEX SERVER so my guess would be that the system is not a problem.

To answer Art and Sheila, Yes we are copying the pdf graphic files into our newly created MIF and yes it definitely means that it is a huge part of the new MIF file. the problem we have is that those graphics are stored in an ORACLE database (blob field) and the MIF file is also created and then stored in the same database. Once the file is created we can then download it or re-generate it if we changed some data or some related graphics. So I guess that referencing would be a problem when downloading the MIF if we don't also download the graphics.

Anyway, the quick fix that I found is simply to create multiple MIF files whenever I have more than 5 graphics. Then after downolading those mif I can create a "book" in Framemaker to generate the new pdf files. This way instead of having only one MIF file I usualy get 2 or 3 but at least the formatting is OK.

Thanks a lot for the quick help. Appreciate it !
