generating a formatted table of contents

I'm trying to generate a formatted TOC in Frame 8. When I generate it, it's in Times New Roman and not in the format I want. I've tried importing the formats I want from another TOC and manually making the changes, but when I need to update the TOC, it loses all the formatting.

How can I generate and update a TOC that contains formatting?

1. Generate the new TOC from your new book.

2. Open an existing, formatted TOC from another book.

3. In the new TOC, do File > Import > Formats. Select the formatted TOC as your source. On the list of formats to import, the only one you may want to skip is Variables, depending on your workflow...

4. After the import of the formats to the new TOC. SAVE THE NEW TOC.

5. Update the new book.

Melissa:

A variation on a theme is to:

* Set up and generate the new TOC, then save and close it.
* Open a properly formatted TOC from some other project, then use Save As to overwrite the new created TOC.
* Re-gen the book to update the new and now properly formatted TOC.

For whatever reason, I've had better luck doing it that way...

Cheers & hope this helps,
Riley

I'm feeling really stupid here...but I just don't know how to get this to work. I tried importing the formats like the help file said and like Art said, and I tried what Riley said, but I feel like I'm missing a step. How does Frame know what paragraph style in the original document corresponds to the paragraph style I want in the TOC? Is there somewhere that I can map that out for Frame? So far the only way I can get the TOC to work is to format it manually each time.

Thanks so much!

Melissa:

Start in the FrameMaker book window: Add > Table of Contents.

FrameMaker displays a TOC setup dialog box. Use it to select the paragraph style you want in the TOC. Probably use the existing TOC as a guide to the styles you choose...

Hmmm...still not there yet. That brings up the same dialog box I've been using and that still won't let me match up formatting. Is there something that must match on the Reference Page? I'm still stumped as to how Frame can generate the new file and tie the two together, knowing what paragraph tags to match up in the TOC. Gosh, what is the step I'm missing?

Thanks for trying!

Melissa,

Both Riley and I are assuming that you use a standard format for your TOCs.

When we say "generate a new TOC." that means adding a TOC to the book file, then right-clicking it and running the Set Up TOC procedure by selecting what component file tags you want to list.

After you generate that TOC, TOC-specific tags are generated so that Heading1 in your chapters is represented as a Heading1TOC tag.

Where there may be a problem is if the formatted TOC lists different tags than your book does. If your book has H1s, for instance, and the previous book had Heading1s, the tags aren't going to automatically match up.

If you're importing all formats from a working TOC, that should also bring in a properly formatted Reference Page.

I am trying to add a list of figures to my book that already has a TOC generated. I thought it will be easy to get an active list of figures but what I am getting is a full list of titles and numbers that is inactive. Does anyone could help me.

Thanks,

Souade

Melissa:

If you don't already have a TOC that's formatted the way you want, you'll need to format one from scratch.

Stated another way, configuring which named paragraph styles FrameMaker includes in a TOC has nothing whatsoever to do with how those named paragraph styles appear in the TOC.

If you have a properly formatted TOC, you can effectively reuse its configuration. If not, you'll need to format the entries; that may include going to the Reference pages...

Cheers & hope this helps,
Riley

Souade,

Your question really is a separate topic. Please re-post in a new thread.
