... surely this is the format to use if I want a crossreference to pick up the chapter number + the chapter heading text? Chapter <$chapnum>: <$paratext[Chapter heading]> starting on page <$pagenum> What I want to achieve is: "Chapter 1: Infrared radiation on page 4" Instead I get: "Chapter 1: on page 4" I do indeed have a tag called "Chapter heading". I know that the "<$paratext[Chapter heading]>" block works, since I use it in running headers. It only does not work in the crossreferences. The chapter openings in my chapters look like this: CHAPTER 1 [has the tag H1] Infrared radiation [has the tag "Chapter heading"] I surely must be overlooking something really obvious, like a spelling error or something but I have checked this several times and have not succeeded in making this work. Any hints? /Mats

Have you tried omitting the [Chapter heading]? If I select paragraphs in the cross reference dialog, I just enter <$paratext> to get the desired result. Cheers, Johann

You should be able to do it with only a single cross-reference. Like Johann said, omit the [Chapter heading], as that syntax is only used to construct running headers and footers.

Hi, I would indeed like to do this with a single crossreference, but it doesn't seem to work. Note that "CHAPTER 1" and "Infrared radiation" are on different lines and have different para tags. When I create the crossreference I need to point to "CHAPTER 1" to pick up the text "Chapter 1". But as far as I can see I can not, in the same crossreference, pick up the text "Infrared radiation", as that would mean that I would need to select another tag in the crossreference dialog box (i.e., "Chapter heading" instead of "H1"). But feel free to prove I'm wrong! /Mats

Two things to try.... * The <$paratextonly[Chapter heading]> building block, to see if that makes a difference. * I never use spaces in tag names... so I'd also suggest trying it with a new tag that doesn't have the space. You might also want to try escaping the space with a \ before the space between "Chapter" and "heading" And just in passing, it would be useful to know what version and OS you're working with.

Hi Art. Tested this, but neither method works. Using FM8.0p277 on Windows XP. /Mats

Mats, Whenever using the <$paratext[...]> construct, you have to keep in mind that FM searches backwards from the target location until it finds the first match. So if you want to include both the Chapter 1 and the "Infrared Radiation" paragraph contents, you need to make your cross-ref to the "Infrared Radiation" paragraph and have the cross-ref format search backward for the "Chapter 1" paragraph. Therefore you can use a reference to both paragraphs in a single cross-reference format, but just be careful as to which paragraph is the target of your cross-ref.

Matt, Do your Chapter Heading text strings include any character tags or over-ride formatting? Art

Arnis, Many thanks. It worked fine according to your instructions and the following building syntax: Chapter <$paranumonly[H1]>: <$paratext> starting on page <$pagenum> but not: <$paratext[H1]>: <$paratext> starting on page <$pagenum> /Mats
