Hi, I'm trying to understand whether (a) this is possible and (b) what the best practice might be... I'm trying to create a document where there are multiple paragraphs in the side bar, but the text in the main text flow (column) is aligned with the first paragraph. For example; Sidebar Main Text Flow Title Description of work Date Location I can see that a soft (?) carriage return (shift + enter) will allow multiple lines of the same paragraph, but not how to place multiple paragraphs. Part of the challenge is that the different paragraphs would have different formatting that I'd like to adjust globally.

Mark, First, a question about terminology... do you have a page that you've set up with a special flow / text container to hold a sidebar, or are you referring to the scholar's margin that's part of most default FM layouts? If the first, you probably can't do it well/easily because there isn't a way to link two separate and discrete flows... because they're separate, by definition. If the latter, set up one tag, for your Sidebar so it's pagination is Side Head and align it to the first baseline. That's your SidebarAnchor. Up to you whether you'd set it up to carry text or not. Then, insert an anchored frame at the beginning of that SidebarAnchor tag. In the anchored frame, create a text frame. Put your subordinate sidebar tags (Title, Date & Location in that). Art

Art, Many thanks for your response. In answer to your question, I'm just using a simple layout with the scholar's margin as you describe. The missing link in my understanding was placing a text frame in a anchored frame - thank you. However.... I seem unable (and have not had much luck with Google) to a) Make the text frame the same size as the anchored frame b) Lock the text frame to the anchored frame so that it moves with it Mark

ps... After further looking and some experimentation, I've found that I get consistent results if; 1) Create anchored frame 2) Using the Graphics Tools, draw a smaller box inside the anchored frame 3) Then use Object Properties to set the text box to be the same size as the anchored frame 4) Small gotcha that I found... the text frame needs to be slightly smaller/offset than/from the anchored frame, otherwise the top edge or RHS of the text gets clipped by the anchored frame!

Well, this is redundant now, but I already had it written and I'm gonna post it. OK, It's pretty easy.... When you insert the anchored frame, you can drag the corners to the correct dimensions or type in dimensions. Then, with the anchored frame selected, click the text frame tool in your graphics pallet. And draw the text frame the size you want it. You can also right click it and fill in the dimensions. If you lose focus on the anchored frame while you're mucking around with the text frame, just cut the text frame, select the anchored frame, and paste the text frame into it. I would make the text frame slightly smaller than the anchored frame so that it's easier to select one or the other. Art

The anchored frame is selectable with a single click on its border. The text frame inside the anchored frame is selectable with a CTRL click on its border or interior. Even if you make them both the exact same size (or if you make the text frame bigger, or if you make the edges completely inaccessible) you can always select the anchored frame (by clicking on its border) and then Select All. -- Kenneth Benson Pegasus Type, Inc. www.pegtype.com
