Aligning body text with side heading graphic

Hi,

I want a paragraph format to have an image positioned in the side margin and the text along-side it. As graphic frames can only be positioned above or below a paragraph, I thought I could get round the problem by having a side heading tag to hold the image and an in column tag after it for the text. Unfortunately though, the in column tag still seems to be aligned below the image. Is there any way to align it with the top of the image? I've tried setting the paragraph spacing after the image and before the body text to negative values and it still doesn't move the text higher.

Thanks,

Kat

Kat,

This is the way I do it.

The paragraph format for the side head graphic should have the pagination properties: alignment = top edge. The default font properties are set to size = 2 points. And the line spacing properties to 2 pt, fixed (you can try 0 points also). Setting the font to 2 pt and the line spacing to 2 pt makes the height of the paragraph to 2 pt, the smallest you can get. The graphic will be 2 pt lower than the top of the text column paragraph, but will be visually unnoticeable unless your text column is all caps.

I have not tried this, but you might try making the side head paragraph line spacing NOT fixed and the graphic inline; along with the top edge alignment.

Good luck,
Van

Hi Van,

thanks for your reply. I've tried what you suggested and the text is still aligned with the bottom of the graphic. Are there some specific settings for the text paragraph format that I need perhaps?

Thanks,

Kat

Kat,

Looking through my notes, the only other thing that needs to be done is to make sure both the side head paragraph and the following paragraph have the same space above values. I think the top alignment is at the top of the space above. So, if your side head paragraph had a large space above, then it could force the graphic down relative to the following paragraph.

Also, if either paragraph has a frame above, that may cause one or the other paragraph to shift. If you have frames above in either paragraph or space above in either paragraph, try deleting these to see if it works. Then add them back in, one by one, and see how things change.

Also, I usually have the line height in both paragraphs fixed. Not sure whether that is required. But I would think that if the following paragraph did NOT have a fixed line height AND the first line includes an inline graphic, then the baseline would shift causing a misalignment.

I went through all this a long time ago, so I know it works. I may not be getting all the information that is needed. If this still does not work, please let me know. Maybe I can think of something else.

Hi Van,

sorry, I didn't explain it very well in my original post. The image is in a frame above for the side heading paragraph. I don't want it to have to be inserted manually because it will be fiddly for users of the template and lead to inconsistencies. Is there no way to align it correctly in this way?

Apologies again for not being clearer.

Kat,

Put the graphic for the side head in a frame BELOW, which is what I do. You are correct, doing this makes the document more consistent from writer to writer AND within the document itself.

Katherine,

Another way to line things up is to use two different paratags in
concert one after another. The first one (say PgfGraphic) has the
graphic in the Frame Below and has the NextPgfTag set to the following
text paragraph (say PgfText).

Set the Space Below on the PgfGraphic tag to be a negative value of
the reference frame height plus the line spacing. Then in the PgfText
tag, set the Space Above to be the same negative value as for the
PgfGraphic tag. This will then back up the PgfText paragraph over top
of the previous one including the Reference frame.

Ensure that your Reference graphic's frame width isn't too wide and
set the PgfText tag's indents to allow for the Reference graphic width
and your ready.

Apply the PgfGraphic tag, hit Enter and start typing the text beside
the graphic.
