Disabling keystrokes for bold, italics, etc. in FM6

I'm preparing a new book that I plan to ultimately publish to print, PDF, epub,
XML, etc. All the single-sourcing advice I see tells me, among other things, to
use only named character tags (styles) for changing character appearances. In
general, this is no problem, but for adding italics, bold, and underlines, I'm
so used to using Ctrl-I, Ctrl-B, and Ctrl-U, I know I'll do it without thinking
about it. To save me from myself, I want to disable these keyboard shortcuts.
Is there a way to do this? I'm using FM6 under WinXP.

Thanks,

Scott

There isn't a really good way to do that because they're Windows formatting shortcuts, not Frame's. A better solution may be to make a clean-up pass on your book occasionally with a plug in that locates over-rides or just a Search-and-replace for those formats with a character tag.

The problem is that they aren't format overrides, and they don't have character
tag names. One way to find them is to use FM's File > Utilities > Create and
Apply Formats command, then look for manufactured character tag names, but
that's pretty indirect.

One thing I'm considering is finding a Windows macro program that will capture
keystrokes before they get to FM, then program it to swallow the shortcuts I
don't want FM to see. Does anybody have any experience with this kind of approach?

You may not think they're format overrides, but Frame does, because they're neither the Default font setting nor a character tag. So they can be located by any of the several plug-ins that locates format overrides.

Do you have FrameScript? It would be simple to create a script that does
nothing, then assign it to any key combinations you want to disable.

You could do the same thing with a FrameMaker plug-in.

Scott,

You can easily remove these commands from FM by modifying the .cfg
files in the \fminit\configui folder.

Make a copy of these files first!

Using a text editor, in the cmds.cfg file look for following commands:
StyleBold, StyleItalic, StyleUnderline. Delete the definitions. Then
in the wincmds.cfg fie, also remove the Modify definitions for these.

When you re-start FM, there won't be any functionality assigned to
those keys anymore.

For more info, refer to the "Customizing Commands" section of the
"Customizing Frame Products" PDF in the \Documents folder.

This worked fine, thanks very much for your help.

Before I posted, I tried the CudSpan huntOverrides tool, and it failed to find
italicized text, but now I see that it finds only paragraph overrides, not
character overrides. Still, I don't think that FM recognizes use of italics or
bold as an override (at least not of the default paragraph font), because there
is no asterisk in the status bar next to the paragraph or character tag name.

Anyway, Arnis Gubins showed me how to disable the keyboard shortcuts, so my
problem is now solved.
