Small but unwelcome irritation - I open FM this morning, and instead of the discreetly hinted text I'm used to seeing on screen, the heavier fonts (Arial 14 bold, for instance) are slightly but significantly jaggy. I've not sleep-walked into the office overnight and changed anything; still FM8, XP, Adobe PDF as default printer. Any hints and tips on getting back to the level of visual comfort I'm used to will be very welcome!

Sorry to state the blindingly obvious, but ... the problem persists across reboots, I would guess?

From you, ma'am, even the blindingly obvious comes as a courteous reminder ... Yes, alas; the problem persists even after the overnight shut-down and restart.

Is this on-screen only, or in hard copy and pdf too? Have you checked to see if your video card drivers are up toate? Art

You know, it just occurred to me that I had a similar thing this week -- I wasn't using FM at the time, so I didn't make a connection to your post. I had been changing the fonts used in a text editor, but when I chose to go back to whatever the original font had been, the display was quite pixellated, and it was particularly apparent in the bold font. What I ended up doing was to go to Adobe Type Manager (yes, I still use ATM 4.1 Pro, a dinosaur) and remove the troubled font from the installed list, reboot, unzip the font from the backups and reinstall it. That cured the problem. I never did track down what might have caused the problem, though. btw, I've come across some links to interesting (and modern!) font manager apps lately that I'd be happy to share if anybody's interested -- maybe we should do a separate thread so they'll get wider visibility though.

Dagnammit, another of those "don't know why it happened but this is how to sort it" issues ... I was beginning to suspect it couldn't (of course!) be FrameMaker's fault; then needed to check an .html file, and saw exactly the same unacceptable level of pixellation. So, I took a look at the PC settings. Under the "Display" settings I found a tab Appearance, and a button Effects. Here I discovered that the option for smoothing the edges of screen fonts had been disabled. Set it to Standard and voil - smoothness restored. So what happened to change the setting in the first place? it's a MStery.

So what happened to change the setting in the first place? it's a MStery. Evidently merely disabling Clippy wasn't enough -- he's apparently sneaking around "helping"... ;^p
