I have chapters (chap1, chap2, etc) and appendixes (appA, appB, etc) and I can't get the TOC to generate the appendix alpha character in the page number column instead of a chapter-type numeric character. So, appendix A still shows 5-87 as the page number instead of A-87. The only way around it I can think of is to manually hack the reference page, but I think there has to be a better way.

It sounds as if you haven't set the numbering properties for the component files of the book in the book file. This configures the type of string displayed by the <$chapnum> variable. In the book file, highlight Ap A. Right click > Numbering > Chapter and set it to start at A and use Alpha style. Apply and Save the book. Then, highlight all the other Aps. Right click > Numbering > Chapter and set it to increment and use Alpha style. Apply and Save the book. Update the book. Art
