I am fairly new to Frame and have been relying on the User Guide PDF that came with the software, but haven't been able to find what I am looking for. I am working on an XP SP3 machine, 1GB, using FM8.0p273
I have created a book file in Frame. Within that book I have separate files for the following items:
* Cover
* Front Pages
* Table of Contents
* List of Figures
* List of Tables
* Body
* Glossary
* Index
* Appendix A
* Appendix B
* Appendix C
* Appendix D
* Appendix E
For the Glossary, Index, and the Appendices, I would like the page number to read as Glossary-1, Index-7, or A-4, etc.
I can do this easy enough in the Master Pages to make the pages print with this prefix setup. The problem that I have is when I update the book, this prefix that I have created for the page numbers does not get pulled into the TOC, LOF, LOT, or Index. For example, page A-4 gets pulled into those lists as page 4.
Is there a way that I can format the page numbering to get the TOC, LOF, LOT and Index to pull the prefix with the page number?
Thanks,
Brian

Numbering like this depends on two things: the building blocks that make up the CurrentPage variable that's in each page footer, and the settings in the book file that control what goes into the building blocks -- in this case, the prefix. 1. On the Master pages of Appendix A, open the CurrentPageNumber system variable that's probably in the footer already. You want to modify the definition to include either the <$chapnum> or <$volnum > building block and your hyphen in front of the pagenum building clock. It'll look something like this: <$chapnum>-<$curpagenum> Save the modified variable and save the file. 2. In the book file, select Appendix A, right click, select Numbering and then either Chapter or Volume, depending on which building block you chose in the previous step. Set the numbering to start with A and be Alphabetic. Apply and Save. Save the book file and then update. Check Appendix A to make sure it's numbering correctly, and check the TOC and your lists to see if the prefix popped. If it all works, in the book file, select the other Appendix files, TOC, Glossary, etc. and Import Formats > Variables. In the book file, repeat the numbering step, but set the following Appendix files to Alphabetic and to increment. For the Glossary and Index, set the Chapter Number property to Text and type the title. Apply and Save and update. (There are a couple other ways to do this, for instance, you can also do this with separate variables instead of putting it all into the Current Page, but that's a slightly different technique.) Art

Art, I have gone through the files that I wanted to add a prefix to the page number and have edited the variable for the page number to include the <$chapnum>- as directed. I have updated the Chapter and Page numbering for each file and the book. I saved the book and updated the book. The page numbers on the pages look exactly how I want them to appear. However, the TOC/LOF/LOT/Index files still do not pull the prefix. I even tried deleting the TOC/LOF/LOT/Index files, and generated new ones. They still don't pull the prefix. Any other suggestions? Brian

Brian, In the TOC and list files, go to the Reference pages. Scroll through them until you find a cluster of markers, one for each of the tags that you're listing. You can tell which ones are which by looking at the status bar. The entries probably look something like: <$paratext> <$pagenum> Add the <$chapnum> variable to the appropriate listings so it looks like this: <$paratext> <$chapnum>-<$pagenum> Save the file and update the book.

Brian, You can use the $chapnum and $pagenum building blocks directly in the footers and headers of your master pages, without creating the system variable, unless you need it for other purposes. These building blocks are also available in cross-reference formats. Van
