GoLive says that my server is not currently processing PHP--but it is

For over two weeks I've been trying to find out the solution to my problem: GoLive says that my server (which is local--I'm using my own computer with php and mysql, running W2K IIS (c:\inetpub\wwwroot\) on it, my database is on the same machine, my web is under \inetpub\wwwroot\) is not currently processing PHP. But it is! I have ran a couple of .php test scripts and it works fine.

I have a web already developed, but in order to continue to make it 'dynamic', I'm stuck with this maddening error message all the time.

I have a book called GoLive 6 Magic and have used a tutorial regarding creating a dynamic site--which worked great, but the tutorial was based on using Adobe's Dynamic Web Server installation instead of my own setup.

Is there anyone out there that can give me a hand? I am at my wits end!

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Heather

One possibility is that the server has register_globals switched off in the server's php.ini file. Even the files which check for PHP support on the server, in the default install of GoLive DC, make use of these global variables, as I remember. Check if that is the case by bringing up /config/info/phpinfo.php in a browser. If the register_globals value is off, you need to update to the 4.3.1 beta update version of the DC libraries available in the Adobe Studio Exchange <http://share.studio.adobe.com/axAssetDetailSubmit.asp?aID=7088&back=http%3A%2F%2Fshare%2Estudio%2Eadobe%2Ecom%2FaxBrowseSubmit%2Easp%3Fc%3D13> (one-time registration required) or set register_globals to On (the former, updating the DC libraries, is the better choice).

I updated those files recently and the phpinfo.php file doesn't have anything regarding register_blobals--the php.ini file on the other hand, does.

John,

I have received the same error messages:

after I enabled register_globals, I restarted my computer. I went back, opened my site clicked on Dynamic Site Wizrd, checked PHP and clicked Next,I chose WebDAV because I have created a virtual directory pointing to my custom-created server and clicked Next,
I entered the HTTP URL and clicked Next. I clicked Next after the Security message and received the same error message:
PHP Not Supported, Your Web server is not currently processing PHP.

Hi Heather,

When the web server is running on the same machine as GoLive you should:

a) set up a virtual directory which points to the GoLive site root. In other words, if the GoLive site is stored in C:\GLSites\sitename folder\sitename, you would point the virtual directory at the folder sitename (highlighted in red above).

b) In the DC wizard use the Site Served Locally option and point to <http://localhost/virtual_dir_name> when asked for the HTTP URL of the site root.

John,

I have two things that have not worked, and maybe, if you can, help me to recreate my staging server:

1. I have used DC_Web_Server through the installation of the GoLive Web WorkGroup CD to create a server. Moved my site to the DC_Web_Server SampleSites folder. Edited the register_globals, enabled them 'On'. Tried going through the Dynamic Site Wizard again, didn't work...same error message.

2. I have tried to create a staging server using W2K IIS and installed a fresh MySQL and PHP and phpMyAdmin (moving the phpMyAdmin files under c:\inetpub\wwwroot\), modified the files necessary to get things rolling, created a virtual directory in the Internet Services Manager (?) to point to my site, and the Dynamic Site Wizard STILL gives me the annoying error message.

I really do need to get a staging server going! I have completely uninstalled EVERYTHING (PHP, MySQL, phpMyadmin, DC_Web_Server, IIS) in the hopes that I can find someone to help start afresh.

I could use any help!

Thank you,
Heather

Hi Heather,

Sorry for not answering sooner. I lost sight of this thread :-(

      1. I have used DC_Web_Server through the installation of the GoLive Web
WorkGroup CD to create a server. Moved my site to the DC_Web_Server SampleSites
folder. Edited the register_globals, enabled them 'On'. Tried going through
the Dynamic Site Wizard again, didn't work...same error message.

Firstly, register_globals is already on in the DC_Web_Server configuration. Where exactly did you edit a php.ini files for the DC_Web_Server which had it set to off?

Secondly, Moving your GoLive site under the SampleSites folder would put it under the document root of the server OK, but which HTTP path did you use in the DC setup wizard? This would be (assuming you didn't change any defaults:

 <http://localhost:82/sitename> folder/sitename

Because you put the site under the server's document root as opposed to aliasing to the root folder of site in the server's configuration files, you would have to include the umbrella folder (sitename folder) in the HTTP path used in DC wizard.

      2. [...] created a virtual directory in the Internet Services Manager
(?) to point to my site, and the Dynamic Site Wizard STILL gives me the
      annoying error message.

Which folder did you point it to?

John,

Ok...I think I've got things working now with the exception of phpMyAdmin (I'm still getting a 403 Forbidden error) and trying to get my database to 'connect' with my 'web' on my staging server.

I don't use phpMyAdmin any more, but you probably need to set it up with valid user account info from MySQL. If you cannot connect to databases via GoLive, that suggests the same problem.

John,

I have PHP working in GoLive on my web, but how do I get my database to 'connect' to my web? I've done the following steps:

1. I click on Site, Settings, New for Data Sources

2. Chose MySQL Database and clicked Add Data Source button

3. for Data Source Name:, I typed in qa
    for Host: localhost
    for Database: q_a
    for User: root
    for Password: heather

4. I click on the Test button and get the following:

<ERROR Number="2" Description="Error: "mysql_connect(): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)" on line 511 of C:\bauhrranch folder\bauhrranch\config\include\mysql.runtime6.php."/>

What could be causing it and what can I do?

It could be quite a few things, the first of which is that the MySQL server is not actually running. Does the MySQL admin in the System Tray show a green light? Can you connect using the mysql command-line client? Another possible problem is that a firewall is blocking access on the port used by the server (3306), even on the loopback connection. Does the machine have a firewall. Another possibility would be that localhost is not being resolved correctly. Try using the IP address 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost.

Every time my computer starts, I have a shortcut to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt.exe in my startup menu--isn't that a sign that MySQL is running? I don't have a firewall on my computer. I will try the 127.0.0.1 to see if there is a problem there.

I've tried the 127.0.0.1, but I received a similar error:

<ERROR Number="2" Description="Error: "mysql_connect(): Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (10061)" on line 511 of C:\bauhrranch folder\bauhrranch\config\include\mysql.runtime6.php."/>

Is there anything else I need to consider?

Hi Heather,

If you go into the bin directory, there should be an *.exe called winmysqladmin.exe. Double-click on it to launch the graphical administration interface. You will be able to tell whether the MySQL server is running or not immediately. The light on the traffic light will be either green or red. If it isn't you can start it from there.

PS. You shouldn't really install the database server in the document root of the web server. Since you don't have a firewall, I suggest that you get one and that you shut down both IIS and MySQL any time you are connected to the internet.

OK...I double-clicked the file, it flashed before my eyes and the light in my system tray is Red. I attempted to 'Start the Service', but it gave me an error message stating 'Fails to Start the Service' please wait 30 seconds and try again. I waited...and I tried again. Same thing.

PS. The only reason I have the database set up under the root server is for testing purposes and not for online purposes.

So, you can't connect to MySQL from GoLive because its not running. If the service won't start, then something else may already be using the port used by MySQL or MySQL may not be installed correctly.

As you are running without a firewall and are running a server, your machine is vulnerable to external attack. If there is any sensitive information in your database, putting it somewhere which can be served up by a web server is not wise.

Consider running a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm at the very least.

So how can I find out what is conflicting with me not being able to run MySQL?

Well, try to narrow down where the problem is first. For example, it won't start as a service. Is it installed as a service? Can you start it manually from the command line?

Here is the MySQL documentation on installing on Windows:
 <http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Windows_installation.html>

To check port usage, use the netstat command in a Command Prompt window. Check for port 3306, which is the port normally used by MySQL.
