For better or worse, I'm working CSS style names that are longer than 12 characters the limit that I can see of the style name in the CSS styles palette. Having JUST upgraded to GoLive CS version from version 5.x, it's now impossible to distinguish the choices that I have when selecting a style from the palette since the first 10 or 11 characters of the name may be identical (example: bodytext1011400, bodytext1011600, bodytext1011250). There needs to be a way to INCREASE the width of the style label field. At the moment, it stays fixed at 12 characters, regardless of how wide I make the window.

I'm very curious why you are using custom classes for this and not just using the cascade of rules into that text? -- Murray ------------ Adobe Community Expert (Dreamweaver)

Murray - I have NO idea to what you're referring ... maybe I'm just not using the CSS feature correctly?

You are using - bodytext1011400, bodytext1011600, bodytext1011250 as custom class names. Please tell me what 1011400 and 1011600 refer to, and then I'll know how to answer your question. -- Murray ------------ Adobe Community Expert (Dreamweaver)

bodytext1011400, bodytext1011600, bodytext1011250
Those sorts of class names are frequently generated by back-end systems.
Unfortunately, there isn't any way to change what can be viewed in the CSS palette.

Murry - It's my own coding system for what the text looks like. For example, bodytext1011400 means that it's 10 pixel-spaced-on-11 pixels with a block of 400 pixels that will be used in the body (as opposed to a header or subheader). I'm finding the CSS palette in the most recent version of GoLive to be quite confusing ... I'm sure that I'm doing this all wrong.

Katie, You might want to switch to context based CSS instead of style based. Let's say that you one day decide (or your client decide) that the text should be 11px and the block 350px. In that scenario those names would be very confusing. Another way of doing it is to use names like "firstParagraph", "leftColumn", "copyRightText","productText", etc...which makes it easier to understand and to maintain, especially if somebody else would need to work on those pages. Just a thought

Thanks, Michael. Actually, I used to use descriptive names such as you've shown, but found that, when going back to update a client site a year later (for example), I would not remember what the parameters were of "firstParagraph," etc. That's why I switched to naming styles in a way that literally defined the typesize, spacing and block parameters. If I had to revise text / resize a block or whatever, I'd create a new style class. Of course, the newer versions of GL have a preview so perhaps it's no longer an issue.

Sound like a lot of work, if the class is used in hundreds of places...

Yeah - I definitely agree.
I use the cascade much more - my stylesheets contain very few custom
classes. Perhaps 2 or 3 at the most, e.g.,
.closer { clear:both; line-height:0; height:0; font-size:0; }
p.firstletter { font-size:24px; color:red; }
like that.
The rest of my rules are like this -
#bodyContent h1 { ... }
#sideBarRight { ... }
#footer ul li { ... }
and so on. I never have a problem remembering or discovering which rule
controls which style.
Also, for what it's worth, there are two font weights recognized by the
browsers - normal (100, I think), and bold (900, I think). Those
intermediate values are of no reliable use.

I'm sure that I'm probably using CSS in a manner that it wasn't intended, but my method has always worked for me so I haven't taken the time to try to investigate the "correct" way ... Anyway, I appreciate the input and will keep all of your suggestions in mind.

Katie, it's a limitation in GL so you are not doing anything wrong. Different things work for different people. You might want to drop Adobe a line and ask them to extend the display area and GL's ability to handle long class and ID names...
