The Firefox problem does indeed come from the layout grid. You might convert it to a table-based grid. That would appear the simplest solution, without giving yourself extra work on the page layout. To see the overlapping behaviour in Firefox 3, you may have to switch on View > Zoom Text Only. The new default behaviour zooms all page content, rather than simply increasing the font size of text content, hence no overlapping; this is the same behaviour as Opera has used for a long time (and which I believe will be adopted for Safari in the next version as well).
