How to allow a table to "grow"?

Using GoLive CS; I'm very much a beginner. =============== I've created a master page for our site template. It has a background, with a table (created from a layout grid) centered on it. Banner at the top, a navigation menu (from MenuMachine) on the left, a large region in the center for content, and a very small table at the bottom of the main table containing the copyright, etc. info. What I want to happen is for the main table to grow based on the amount of content in the editable region. I read the Help and it convinced me to convert the layout grid to a table to accomplish this. However, when I test this, I find the editable region is the only editable region and the background "swatch" are the only items that grew. I'm sure it must be the small 'copyright, etc.' table at the bottom that is the problem. Is there a way to merge it with the main table so that the aggregate will then grow with the content? Also, any suggestions on how to maintain a maximum width for the editable region? For example, I dumped a bunch of test text in it and it expanded well to the right. It'd be nice to have it auto-word wrap. (I can use the other parts of CS to re-size charts and pictures.) Many thanks in advance! Sorry - should have thought of that myself. Mike: Can you post a link to your page, please? A glance at your page's code will tell us exactly what is going on - otherwise we have to guess.... -- Murray

No. you can't just put the code in a message - see instructions in the grey box at the top of the page. What we really need is a live link to your uploaded page.

I don't have it uploaded. I'm building then site. Guess I'll just duplicate the template and create a master for each page so each has enough room for that page's content. I'll come back to it in a couple weeks and work on this issue; right now I need to get the site up. Thanks anyway, Mike

Other than oodles of invalid HTML, there is nothing there that would prevent that table from 'growing' as content is added to it. -- Murray

Michael, You have not removed all the layout grids used to construct that page. There are two remaining. If you want to get a better idea of what's going on, you will also need to remove those. You are also using layers in the page, which certainly do not possess any of the "elastic" qualities of HTML tables. I suspect the layers may be part of the problems you are encountering. They will operate entirely independent of the table, because they use CSS rather than HTML. There isn't much point going into technicalities if you are a beginner as you say, but the main point to remember is that the position and size of "layers" is going to be independent from and unrelated to the tables you think they are "in". Remove the nested grids, and if you want to construct the page layout using tables: 1) Don't use layout grids. 2) Try to simplify the tables as much as possible. Try not to nest tables one inside another. 3) Do not mix tables and layers together. They aren't based on the same principles and don't play well together, even when you know very well how both work. You might also want to start looking into using CSS rather than tables for laying out web pages. There are worse places to start than: <http://www.w3schools.com/css/> John
