Hi, a trivial query. I have seen some sites where the background colour for the quicktime plugin player is black not white. On my proto site <http://www.goldenumber.co.uk/beermatts_trumpet_pages/> if you click on the midi files the player has a white background which I would prefer to be black. Do I need to edit the midi file itself? Any suggestions gratefully received.
Regards, Matt.

Why does a MIDI file have a background at all? Shouldn't it simply be a scrub/controller bar on your page?

Have you experimented with how this web page looks in several browsers?

Any QuickTime element is a hit or (likely) miss matter. Not everyone has QuickTime installed. Windows users (the bulk of the internet public) probably do not have QT, which is installed by default for Mac users and those of us using GoLive.

Perhaps if you could share a page link, we could see what is happening.

Hi Jim, thanks for that. When I click on the midi file links on the page in my original post ( <http://www.goldenumber.co.uk/beermatts_trumpet_pages/> ) on my home computer at least, I get a new browser tab with the quicktime play bar in the middle of a white page. I would like this page to be black. I have seen it black and indeed yellow on other sites. I was wondering how to do this.
Many thanks, Matt.

What you are linking to from your web page is a plain MIDI file. Unless you present that MIDI file within a web page, you have no control over how it is displayed to the user.

The user might not even use QuickTime to play the file. Some users may be asked to download it instead of playing it.

If you want to style the presentation, you will need to create a web page for each MIDI file to play within.

Thanks for your help. Perhaps I can illustrate what I am talking about with an example. If you have 2 mins... go to this site... <http://www.zianet.com/jw_laurie/midipage.html> and click on say the house of the rising sun. I believe that this is just a link to a midi file but it displays with a black background in my browser at least.
Many thanks for your help. Matt.

I still see a white background when I click on a MIDI file link.

Unless you place the MIDI file in a web page (such as with EMBED SRC), you cannot control how the MIDI player plugin will display in the browser. Look at the zianet.com page linked above for an example. The directory web page is black (with text and graphics) and plays 'Hold on to the Night' in the background because it is embedded in the HTML.

If you want to control the appearance, you need to create a new HTML page for each MIDI file.

Example:

Create a new file called 'The_Fields_of_Athenry.html' and use the following example HTML...

<html><head>
<title>The Fields of Athenry</title></head>
<body bgcolor="black">
<EMBED SRC="http://www.goldenumber.co.uk/beermatts_trumpet_pages/midis/The_Fields_of_Athenry.mid" AUTOSTART="true" HIDDEN="false" Width="145" Height="24">
</body>
</html>

Link to this HTML file instead of the MIDI file.
