Photoshop allows users to quickly change the brush size with the bracket keys. A similar quick key for Illustrator stroke weights would be appreciated

Ai operate in the same keys as in Ps. [ ] But for some reason, in Ai CS4 "Paint brush tool" does not show the actual brush size.

And that is not a good shortcut anyway as it only works on Englsih keyboard layouts - which we do not all have.

It doesn't have to be the bracket keys. It was for example only. It could be any key command

This plug-in is perfect, you can adjust stroke weight + or- in percentage terms. I use it on a daily basis. It's especially useful to use after re-scaling objects and you want a rather 'thin' looking illustration to become heavier to mach a neighbouring one. Just highlight/select the 'thin' illustration and increase the weight of all in 5% increments until you see what you want. The plug-in is called PointControl and is available to download from here: <http://www.worker72a.com/72a_Pages/CS3_Plug-ins.htm>
