I'm new to Illustrator CS4. I made a 3D cube after watching a video tutorial. Fill is set 50% transparent. Checked "Show Hidden Faces" box. Hidden sides not showing through. What could be wrong? Mac Pro OS X 10.5.6

Give the fill the 50 opacity but before going the the 3D effect go to the appearance panel and instead of selecting the fill you want to select the Path as you are going to apply the 3D effect to the object and not its fill, the object has the dimensions or if you wish the geometry and the fill is only contained with in the geometry. Teri Petit would explain this a little differently but it is the same thing. So you apply the effect at the object level. Now you will be able to see the hidden faces. Yes very tricky but essential in the way illustrator works. If they did not mention this in the Video it was an oversight or they mentioned it in some earlier tutorial about applying effects. Maybe one day Mordy will do tutorial on the different levels that effects and selections can be made and applied.

Wade, thank you very much for the explanation. I did get it to work, when I selected the path box in the appearance panel as you suggested. Shift-Clicking or dragging on/ around the object or path line did not seem to work. Although it looked as though it was selected. The video episode I was watching had Morty Golding showing how to make a transparent dice. He seemed to select the object just by clicking on it, did not mention or show any added modifier key. Hard to tell in the video, but the appearance panel was not used to select it. I know I need to learn the basics. I was afraid my video card was not doing it's job. Again, thank you very much for taking time to help. Much to learn...
