Illustrator CS3 crash

On one of our machines here Illustrator CS3 repeatedly crashes for no apparent reason. Illy starts up all right and we can sometimes work for some time without problems. Then it unexpectedly quits. The trouble has got worse recently. I have tried trashing the prefs folder, turning off unused applications, emptying the clipboard, emptying the trash, restarting the machine but Illy is still not stable.
I think maybe Illy should be reinstalled from its original disc.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Before you do that try a new user.

Also look for a font cache cleaning application or use cocktail to clean your font cache.

You may have a corrupt font on that machine. So reinstalling will only help temporarily.
On the other had if it works in a new users your preferences folder could be corrupt you either will trouble shoot it or do an archival reinstall of your system.

We eventually found what the problem was.
We cleaned the font cache but nothing appeared to be wrong. We tried new user but that didn't help either. We chucked out the preferences folder but Illustrator kept on crashing on startup.
Suddenly someone spotted that the default language (top of the list in the International System Preferences) had been changed to Arabic. The person using the machine had been fiddling with some Arabic text. So we changed the default language back to its normal setting (Icelandic in our case) and Illy then started working again as if nothing had happened :-)
Funny thing was though that InDesign on the same machine had been working perfectly all the time.
Moral: Illy doesn't like Arabic unless you've got a ME version.
