I have the same trouble if my HP deskjet is the default printer, but when i have my LaserJet PostScript printer as the default...No trouble with delays. As noted some where in the help files in Adobes site and readme file in CD rom, Illustrator (All versions) need a PostScript printer as a default printer driver to work properly.
