Hi fellow InCopy and InDesign geeks!

Using InDesign, is there an simple way to add all stories in a multi-page InDesign document to Unassigned InCopy Content (UIC) in the assignment panel?

I want to avoid using assignment files and prefer InCopy users to access all stories via the InDesign file. Here are the two methods I know how to accomplish this:

1) Go to each page selecting all objects (so I'm sure I don't miss a small text box) and dragging it to UIC. After all pages have been processed, go to the UIC in the assignment panel and remove all graphic content objects.

or...

2) Select Edit> InCopy> Add All Stories to Assignment> New..., create a new assignment, and save the INCX files accordingly. Once saved, go back to the assignment panel, and move all the INCX files to UIC, then delete the former assignment which deletes the INCA file automatically.

Seems like jumping through hoops to achieve such a simple task. I must be missing something!

According Anne_Marie's response in this post <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c059575> "...All these stories end up in the Unassigned InCopy Content category in the Assignments panel..." but my Mac Intel Leopard InDesign 5.0.3 disagrees and demands that I create assignments anytime I choose Edit> InCopy> Add All Stories to Assignment> New...

Please help! Kudos for those who can! -Mike

Hi Mike, fwiw almost all of my clients forego assignments and use a layout-based workflow as you describe.

I think you're overlooking a menu item and its submenu. The first set of commands in Edit > InCopy are for assignment-based workflows. Underneath them, right under a menu separator rule, there is an Export command. Look there for the commands you'll need for a layout-based workflow. Probably you want to use Edit > InCopy > Export > All Stories. In CS3, this ignores un-overridden master page stories, so it's a handy little guy. (In previous versions the command would export every folio ... oy)

When you export, be sure to save the stories into their own folder so editors don't accidentally open them instead of the layout. I usually put exported .incx files into a "stories" folder. If you use ID's Assignments feature, it creates a folder called "content" for these files automatically.

I knew I was missing something! Thanks Anne-Marie for the whack on the side of the head... How could I have missed it!?

I plan to make sub-folder called "InCopy files" that will not change locations. The label "Stories" may be a little confusing for our workflow because their is already a folder named "Text" for incoming Word and RTF files.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question! -Mike
