Anne-Marie, So sorry for the faulty nomenclature--we're still learning the ins and outs over here. What you described, however, is EXACTLY what we've been doing--I just got the wording somewhat wrong. The Editor is always opening the assignment file (INCA) and the Designer is always working with the INDD file. In response to your troubleshooting questions, then, we are not directly opening INCX files, nor are we "Saving As." Below I've reposted my original message with the correct terminology: Ingredients: 1 Mac running InDesign CS2 with the Live Workflow Plugins installed (Designer) 1 PC running InCopy CS2 4.0.1 (Editor) 1 networked server (Novell) to which both computers are connected Setup: The Designer opens an existing INDD file, creates an INCA file, and saves it to the server. The Designer creates and assigns stories (INCX). The Editor opens the INCA file on the server and can see all of the stories within it. Attempt 1--using live workflow: The Editor tried making changes to the INCA file while it is concurrently open on the Designers computer. The Editor could check out a story, make changes, and check it in. When the Designer looked at the Assignments pane on his computer, however, it did NOT reflect that any changes had been made to the INCX file. This led us to believe that we needed to Save Content. The Editor then tried checking out a story, making changes to the text, and using the Save Content command in the File drop down menu. This resulted in the error message Cannot save FILE_NAME.incx. The Editor then attempted to Save All Content in the File drop down menu, and the program froze and closed. No combination of saving and checking in/out works for the Editor in the live workflow. The Designer, however, can make changes using these techniques. He edited some of the text in an INCA file by checking out a story, making changes, and then saving changes via Edit > Incopy > Save Content. This resulted in a triangular yellow out of date symbol on the Assignments pane. This symbol also shows up on the Editors computer. Both computers can successfully Update Content and see the changes that were made. Attempt 2--not using live workflow: The Designer created an INCA file and related INCX files and then closed the file in question (leaving InDesign running in the background). The Editor opened the INCA file, checked out a story, made changes, chose Save Content, and checked the story back in. No error messages appeared. The Designer opened the INDD file and a triangular yellow out of date symbol appeared on the Assignments pane. When the Designer updated content, the changes made by the Editor could be seen. From this, we conclude that there might be something wrong with the live workflow system or our server. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can get the live workflow to function? ADAM--we will investigate your Novell theory. It's been a buggy system in other ways, so I wouldn't count it out. Thanks, ~Matt
