Appropriate InCopy use?

I'm looking for some advice on the uses of InCopy. We're an environmental consulting firm and use InDesign to create our client reports. We've been writing in Word, then placing the text, photos and figures all in InDesign. Until recently this system has been working well.
Problems arise if there are a lot of changes from draft reports to final reports. For one, editing large amounts of text is easier/more comfortable in Word than InDesign. And secondly, there are a lot of formatting changes (photo positions, captions, headers) that follow when lots of text is added or deleted from one version to the next.
Would using InCopy solve these problems because the programs are related? Is it a good enough word processing program?
A lot of the talk I've seen is about designers being able to constrain writers to a certain block of space (like for newspapers). I'm more interested in the designers being able to easily accomodate massive changes in text quantity.
Thanks for your help.
Maggie
