You can only Save As if you're working on a stand-alone InCopy document (not one you checked out via a layout or assignment file).

If you need to save versions of your stories that you're checking out and editing, your choices are:
1) Use Version Cue (free software w/CS and CS2 but requires set-up and careful tending), which saves versions automatically.
or
2) Before you make major edits, select all the text in the story, copy, create a new InCopy doc (File > New), paste, save it somewhere in an archive folder, close it.
or
3) Use a third-party plug-in from Woodwing or K4 that has version features built-in (but all designers/editors need to run the plug-ins and sometimes they require a significant investment in time and set-up).

Or, turn on Track Changes and keep it on, not the same as versioning but at least you can reject changes you didn't mean to make, even after opening/closing the doc many times.
