Help Needed Getting Started with InCopy/InDesign Implementation

I can't find any real technical documentation on getting the InDesign / InCopy system set up (it's as if Adobe doesn't want users to know how to use the software). There are just lots of breezy tutorials that mention concepts without explaining them. So I'm hoping some users with experience can give me pointers as to what I'm overlooking.

Here's where I'm at:
- Our Art Department already uses InDesign CS2
- We bought and installed copies of InCopy on editorial systems on the same network
- I've added the LiveEdit plug-ins to the InDesign systems (the assignments pallette is present)

Issue 1:
- In InDesign, no elements appear under "Unassigned InCopy Content" in the pallette
- I can select elements in the layout and do "Add to Assignment | New"
- The assignment file is created, but no content is actually assigned.
- The Assignment file can be opened on the InCopy system, but nothing can be checked out or edited (check in / check out options remain greyed out).

Issue 2:
I'm confused by the username facility. Do usernames need to be established and managed somewhere programatically, or do users simply input any ol' username when they want to edit a file. (And do we really need to assign pieces to specific users for tracking to work?)

Side note:
We want the simplest implementation as possible. That seems to be the promised beauty of InCopy, yet complexities that I'm not concerned with keep being pushed on me. We don't need parallel editing capabilities (we will still have a linear process) and we don't need Version Cue. I understand that LiveEdit removes some of the complexities, but most of the documentation uses Version Cue examples (discussing assigned users getting update alerst and so on). I can't figure out for sure what the simplest working implementation would be. Any input on this would also be appreciated.
