Lose text within embedded graphic with InCopy files

When I edit text, in Incopy, that is inside an embedded graphic, and save and close to work on the file at a later time, I lose the text within the graphic. It shows up as overflow, which means I have to delete the entire graphic and retype the info. This does not happen consistently. What is happening to cause this?
Can I only save changes to a text box feature by stating the changes in a note? Can only InDesign make changes to that embedded graphic?

PC using CS3 5.0.4

Can you explain this a bit better? What do you mean by text in an
embedded graphic?

This is for a workbook page for educational materials. Picture a graphic that is a text box or word box, a designed feature that encircles a list of words or several sentences, set apart from the rest of the page inside a graphic, which is nothing more than a border really, encircling the text. (A little anchor represents it in Galley view.)
It seems like I can edit the text in the box. I close the file, saving my work. I go back into the file to proofread it, and the text no longer appears inside the graphic. The graphic is still there, but it's empty. There is a little red plus sign in the lower right side of the box, which means I have overrun and won't be able to forward the program as an InCopy file until I correct it.
I can't get the text back. So I end up going into Galley view, deleting the anchor that represents the now empty graphic, and retyping in the text that should appear there.

Very hard to picture...can you post a couple of screenshots at
pixentral.com?

Yeah I've been trying to figure it out too.

I don't understand how you could delete an anchor in Galley view without losing the entire graphic. The anchor icon in Story/Galley represents the entire anchored object (text frame or image frame or a grouped set of frames).

So if you delete the anchor, where are you retyping the text? In the main text flow?

It sounds like you're talking about an anchored text frame that has a border on it and text inside... but you're calling it a graphic. Could this be the case?

Yes, Anne Marie, you are correct. I am fairly new to this program and process so I am not sure what to call everything. This is what the publisher called it. When I delete the anchor in Galley, it deletes the entire item, including text inside, and I have to retype the text into the main text flow.

I am unable to send a screen shot. First of all, I no longer have the offending feature to send.

Is there a way to change the text in an anchored text frame with Incopy? Or can this only be done in InDesign? Apparently, the publisher can still see this item with InDesign, but not with InCopy.

Pamela, you should be able to edit the text in anchored frames in InCopy without a problem. I just tested over here with ID/IC CS3 and was able to see the edits I made inside the anchored frames, even after checking in the stories, closing and reopening the docs in the same program, in the other program, and so on.

You won't be able to see the text in anchored frames in Galley/Story in InCopy, you can only see/edit it in Layout view. Be sure you check out the story that the frame is anchored in (of course).

When you're in layout view, and you click an insertion point inside an anchored text frame, does an entry highlight in the Assignments panel? It should. If it doesn't, then there's something wrong.

What you see in Layout view in InCopy is exactly what the InDesign user sees in InDesign.

Also, are you working locally (off the same network) as the InDesign user, or are you working remotely (off site)?

Anne Marie, I am working remotely. I'm a freelancer working for a publisher, in InCopy per their request. I will have to try clicking in the anchored text frame (good to know what to call it) and see if it highlights. I know the publisher noticed the same thing, that the text was visible in InDesign, but not in InCopy. She couldn't explain it either.
I do realize that I can't view text in an anchored text frame in Galley view. But that is where I have to be to delete a feature.
Perhaps working remotely is part of the problem?

How are receiving the file? Are they being packaged for InCopy?

Yes, they are packaged for Incopy.
And I want to reiterate that I am able to make changes within the anchored text frame. The problem is after I save the file and go back in to work in the file again. When I open the file to proofread it, the text within the anchored text frame is not visible and there is a little red plus sign in the lower right corner. The text frame appears blank.

I "Control-S" and then when I close the file it asks if I want to check in the stories so I do. When I open again, I choose Open Recent from the File pull-down menu and open the appropriate file.

It's sounds like you're doing everything correctly. If you'd like to
email me the original package that you received I'll take a look here to
see if I can duplicate it.

Click my name, go to my website and you'll find contact info there.

Bob, I sent you an email with the problematic files attached. You should receive them shortly. We'll see if you can duplicate the same problem I am having.
Thanks!

For the sake of any lurkers. I got the files and saw the empty anchored
frame but noticed it was showing up as overset. I couldn't figure out
anything but decided to try opening the package in InCopy CS4 where, lo
and behold, it opened just fine but there was a note in the frame.

When I deleted it and resaved the package for InCopy and opened that in
CS3, it opened just fine.
