Have a couple of issues with Master pages. Having elements so locked that any change results in the page being ompletely disconnected from the master is counterproductive. Also inability to create viable linked text boxes (when there are more than one to a page) is also counterproductive.

So don't do the first and what are you talking about on the second. Seems premature to be adding to the wishlist when you're still trying to come to terms with how it works.

I think you mean threading not linking. Perhaps that will help you look up threading text frames on the master pages. Linking of text frames has to do with linking to external files.

Only those attributes of master elements that you change on the document page lose their link to the master page unless you actually detach them. What's happening to you now? Are you newly switched over from Quark?

And I totally don't understand the thing about threading text frames on a master page. That works just fine. Are you having trouble linking across a master spread?

It sounds like Alan is coming from Quark. There's been quite a number of
discussions regarding the differences between ID and XP Master Pages.
