Bo I had a chance to experiment and yes, the feathering edges effect is based on Adobe's transparency scheme. Check out Chapter 10 in your user manual for a good explanation of transparency effects and flattening options. The feathering edges effect is described on page 302. In the introduction to Chapter 10, the manual rather breezily states: "It's possible to add transparency to your artwork without realizing it--for example, by adding drop shadows and feathering objects, or by placing files with transparency that originated in other applications, such as Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. Be aware of when you're using transparency, because you need to set some extra options when printing and saving transparent artwork." Uh-huh. Like most users are going to notice that little disclaimer buried on page 295 of the manual. They should have put it in fluorescent ink inside the front cover. Even better, a warning message should appear on-screen whenever one of these effects is applied. When it was just an option within Illustrator and Photoshop, at least any transparency issues would be isolated to individual graphics. Now that it's available within InDesign, transparency and the problems it will inevitably create are going to cause lots of reprints and spoilage. Unfortunately, that's going to lead to bad feelings, finger-pointing, and even lawsuits between printers and their customers. Mark my words. Scott
