hi, am not a mac user just want to know why PM shutsdown while trying to view/open a PM file that comes from pc, i created the PM file in pc, placed my images as inline graphic and open it up in Mac when opening PM shutsdown, tried opening it again, it opens but after viewing some pages (more like 8-10 pages) per file, PM shutsdown again, are there any workaround about this? coz' it will take a lot of time for me to take out all the the inline graphic i placed in my PM files.

the mac i used is from my printer provider they all uses Mac OSX but i started PM after starting the classic OS9.

they say that this was also their problems, and they also ended up corrupting the file some saying as (bad index file) any ideas why this happening? hoping someone here might give me a solutions. coz' i need it badly.

thanks in advance.

Pagemaker is crappy software now! Its old its tired and really should not be used anymore. If its just for printing why not make a PDF?

If you want you can send me the file. click my name. I'll have a look at it.

Something you might want to do is a save as to see if it cleans up the file or even have them open it in InDesign.

PM is old i knew that, but still my printer provider uses PM coz' all their inhouse layout still can't use ID, i even ask for them to use ID instead, but they are my boss. what can i do but to use PM. that's why i post my problem here hoping to get some workaround in order for PM not to shutdown when viewing/open the files with inline graphics. they still uses PM to prepare the file for PDF and uses PM to edit some files that needed editing.

Buko offered to take a look at your file. Did you send it to him?

sorry for the delay of my reply, the images is bitmap and CMYK tiff (for the icons). i placed the images inside the textframes some of it.

if i send it to you Buko it will take a lot of time for me coz' the minimum size of one file is 7mb and am only using dial-up.

also checked the links, there are no signs of problem (all links and fonts are updated) coz' i've used the save for service provider option.

am just wondring that maybe their MAC machine is kinda slow eventhough they're using OSX coz' my pc is P4 2.8ghz with 512MB of RAM, i don't know how to check the specs of their MAC.

thanks for your replies.

Do you have your PageMaker preferences set to Save Smaller? That could be a factor in both the size of the file and this problem.

Could be a font problem.

Could be that the file has latent corruption in it that is overwhelming the Mac version. Have you tried a diagnostic recompose on the Windows machine.

Nope, i doubt that coz' my printer provider always tells me what font should I use so that there would be no font problem when we open the file in MAC.

Not sure how to use diagnostic recompose in windows?

But if the font on the Mac is corrupted (where it is more likely to happen), then what your printer provider has to say isn't all that relevant. I can't help with the Windows diagnostic recompose -- I'd be hard pressed to come up with the Mac keystrokes these days.

You might check the FAQ in the PageMaker_Windows forum.

How do I know if the font installed in MAC is corrupted, the inhouse layout will definitely not accept the fact that their font is corrupt.

Dave I already check the file using Diagnostic Recompose in Windows. No problem(s) found.

Try temporarily removing all (well, most -- you can't remove all system fonts) of the fonts and see if the document will open. If it does, then you have a font problem. If it still fails, then you can rule out the fonts.

Ok I'll try that. What if it is not a font problem? What should I do? What's next? They are suggesting that I remove te images inside the text frame and place it again outside. But they are talking about 60 files with atleast 7-9pages per files. That would be a lot of work for me.

Are these images tifs or eps files? That might make a difference. Sometimes, the problem can be a bad link. At which point in the workflow does the shutdown occur?

Could it be a memory problem? How much memory have you allocated to Classic? How much to PageMaker?

The images are all tiff (CMYK/Bitmap/B&W), its not a link problem, it shutsdown by just viewing page by page. Don't know about the memory, I might as well ask them about this. Dave what do you suggest about the memory allocation for Classic and PM?

For PageMaker make it a minimum of 50MB. If your Classic setting is enough to accommodate this, then you can leave that.

Could one of the files be embedded?

Do the files crash on the Windows version? If not, I'd have to vote a
font problem as well.

Buko I'm certainly sure that there are no embedded files/images in one of my PM files :) as I have posted before I used the "save for service provider option" that's why its definitely no embedded and the links are updated/correct.

Bob thanks for replying :) there are no corrupt/crash files under Windows. It really happens only on MAC. Maybe your right and Dave too :) I'm just waiting for a good timing to brought this up to their lead artist.

Well then, why not just work on the Windows machines?

Leinan I must correct you.

Its Mac, when you refer to Apple computers.

MAC stands for Media Access Control
