You were on the right track ... I solved the issue myself (incompatible printer). Do you know where I can go to find out which printer would be best for my purposes, in terms of setting something up with the least amount of potential issues going in? Primary app will be newsletters, so I'll need a color laser that can handle tabloid size paper.
