I can't get the page numbering system to start from any page other than page 1. I want my page numbering to start from page 5 of my document. I've placed my numbers on the master pages but when I go to File / Document Setup and type 5 into the 'Start page' box I find that my document pages now start at page 5 but the page numbering on the actual document itself still starts at page 1. This is mighty strange, what's going on? I've tried all ways, how do I get the page numbering to start on page 5? Is this possible in PM or is someone going to advise I get InDesign for such a facility?

Is this a Master page issue? Check the FAQs: * John Davies, "9.10 - Page numbering 1" #1, 17 Apr 2003 6:04 am </webx?14@@.1de8c44d/0> * John Davies, "9.11 - Page Numbering 2" #1, 4 Jan 2004 10:29 am </webx?14@@.2ccf2f20/0> Iechyd da! John 21:19 12/02/2009 GMT

Ah, thanks once again John. This is a strange failing of PM. Who includes the cover, contents, and introduction in the numbering? Must have been a Friday job.

PM is dead for a reason.
Well, I would have thought that would be a simple enough thing to cure. No reason for Adobe to dump PM and create a new programme i.e. ID. Why not just improve PM? Anyway, that's another story, perhaps there was something fundamentally wrong with it.

I am just an amateur, but I tried changing the starting page number to 5 in the document setup box, and all works fine when I print out in pdf. So it works with my PM65. Am I missing something here? After working with PM65 for many, many hours, I have learned two things, carved in stone: Re-boot often Defrag often. The manual tells you to do this. Believe it! Carole

There was a very good reason...PM's code was such a mess that it couldn't be upgraded. That is not conjecture, either; it's fact. Adobe bought Aldus, not to get PM, but to get a new program they were developing, a program that came to be called InDesign. Bob

Ah Rob, so there is something fundamentally wrong with it. Now that's a reason. I didn't know Aldus had started the development of the programme that then became ID. Anyway, Carole, I have PM7 and I've tried it again and the same happens. Any number that I type into the Start Page Number box is then the number that page 1 starts with. If I type in 5, then page one starts as 5 (and who wants the cover given a page number?), and also PM's own numbering of the document pages starts as numbering page 1 as page 5 aswell, which makes the page numbering system next to useless, unless you split the document up as suggested in the solutions suggested in John's link above. What I want of course is for page 5 to start as page 1.
