I am looking to outline or add shadow to a font so that text will stand out against a full-colour picture background. How can I do this?

In Pagemaker? You can't.

Piece of cake in InDesign.

You can do a cheap shadow by putting a copy of the text in black and
putting it behind the text an offseting it slightly. This will only get
you a sharp edge shadow.

The mac version of pagemaker has an outline funtion from the operationg
system, but it was a worse disaster than faux bold or faux italic

Basically you have to create the text with a soft shadow/outline in
photoshop over your background and import that.I used to do version
where I had the live text in pagemaker, but I built the shadow over the
background in photoshop. It was a lot of work just for a shadow.

Indesign is much easier.

Create your effect in a drawing app like Illustrator and then place it on the PM page.

Hard edge effects only, no soft shadows, this has to go over a photo.
